Breckenridge, Minn. is located along the mighty Red River. It is a town that is prone to flooding every year. Due to the fact that they flood nearly every year and have several major floods including the flood of 1997 and most recently the flood of 2009, the Breckenridge community is very prepared for a crisis.
I recently have been studying the crisis communication of Breckenridge and have just began to get into the information. Over the years, Breckenridge has been working on hindering the flooding that occurs in their community. I am working towards finding out much about the city of Breckenridge and exactly what it does to deal with crisis communication during its floods.
I will be finding out who the spokespeople are, what channels of communication are used, which channels of communication were most effective, and what can be done better.
When it comes to channels of communication, they used the Internet, television, and radio for sure, but I am thinking that other mediums could have been used as well. As far as which one was the most effective for them, I need to do more research to know for sure. As I study how Breckenridge deals with crisis communication, I will hopefully find ways for them to improve their crisis communication which will ensure better safety for the residents, less emotional damage, and overall will control the situation more effectively when the flood hits.

I think Breckenridge is a great community to do a crisis communication about flooding. I remember tht during the flood of 1997 they were hit hard by the waters. Since they are right on the river they know the chances of flooding are great and have a plan of attack. Their mediums probably are close to ours in such that the radio and tv broadcasts where the most effective. It will be good to do research to see if this assumption is right and what other ways of communication was effective. Good community to research!
ReplyDeleteI will be be interesting to know about the communications of this town. Out of the blogs I read Most were on Valley City. I will beinterested to read your next blog that is due in a few hours to see what different things you have found out. I also believe that Valley City was also very prepared and had effective communication through out the flood fight. Goodluck and hopefully you will find ways to make their communication better!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how many towns such as Breckenridge were affected by the flooding Red River. I cannot imagine having to deal with a crisis such as a flood every year. It brings up the question of why you would want to live in place where one would constantly have to deal with flooding. However, I am sure it can be presumed that Breckenridge has a good crisis communication plan, as they have to implement it often. I know that back home in Manitoba, the government it offering buy outs for properties that are commonly flooded. This offers an out for residents, and answers to angry tax payers who have to fund the flood effort every year.
ReplyDeleteDoes the fact that there is a city on the other side of the river effect how they communicate with there citizens? Is there a joint effort on the part of Breck and Wahpt or is it separate?
ReplyDeleteI think its cool your doing it on a different community. It will be nice to here about how a different community handled a similar situation. What they did different and which community did it better.
